How to make your baby food
Satisfy your baby’s changing appetite with healthy, nutritious, cost saving and safe baby foods.
- Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months of age of an infant and after that have to introduce many family foods (complementary feeding) with breastfeeding to fulfil all energy and nutrition gaps which is a crucial need for an infant.
- Things you need to consider while making foods (complementary foods) for an infant are-
- Rich in energy, protein and micronutrients ( particularly calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, zinc, and folate);
- Not spicy or salty;
- Easy for the child to eat;
- Liked by the child;
- Locally available and affordable .
3. Before cooking you need to follow five keys to get safer food-
- Keep clean
- Separate raw and cooked
- Cook thoroughly
- Keep food at safe temperatures
- Use safe water and raw materials
4. For a child with 6-8 months of age, start with thick porridge, well mashed foods and continue with mashed family foods. 2-3 meals (½ of a 250 ml cup) per day. 1-2 snacks may be offered depending on the child’s appetite. Average amount of food daily needs about 250 ml.
5. For a child with 9-11 months of age, give finely chopped or mashed foods, and foods that the baby can pick up. 3-4 meals (½ of a 250 ml cup) per day. 1-2 snacks may be offered depending on the child’s appetite. Average amount of food daily needs about 350 ml.
6. For a child with 12-23 months of age, give maximum family foods and chopped or mashed if necessary. 4 meals (½ of a 250 ml cup) per day. 1-2 snacks may be offered depending on the child’s appetite. Average amount of food daily needs about 750 ml.
7. Prepare food just in 3 steps –
- Step 1- Clean your workstation and raw foods: Wash your hands, clean every utensils and surfaces which you will need while cooking and clean raw ingredient foods needed for cooking.
- Step 2- Prepare all the ingredients: For grains and cereals, after cooking, make purée or grind them and can serve with breast milk or formula milk. For fruits and vegetables, bake, steam or boil them and hard fruits like apples before puréeing or grinding. Mild yellow or orange veggies, green veggies and fruit can be given with peel, and either pit or strain as needed, then purée in a blender, grinder or food mill, adding liquid. Purée trimmed and skinned cooked meats and poultry either alone or with already-introduced foods can give.
- Step 3- Add flavour in a healthy way : In this period baby’s taste buds are starting to develop, so introduce maximum taste to the child but don’t add too much salts, spices and sugars. Children don’t need these at this time. A very little amount of flavour like salt can apply.
After getting the perfect consistently, mashed or thickish texture, stop cooking and safely feed and serve.
8. Have to increase food consistency and variety gradually as the infant grows older, adapting to the infant’s requirements and abilities.
